Weekly Farm Update: 3/30/13 – 4/5/13

[singlepic id=111 w=320 h=240 float=left]This weekly update might be on the short side as I seemed crunched for time with everything I’ve been doing recently. The plants that were filling the greenhouse have now all been transplanted outside which equals more than 150 new plants down in the remote garden. This was accomplished all in one day with a special thanks to our friends Teddy and Andrew who came out and got down in the dirt with us last Saturday.

We had some poor germination rates with out eggplant seeds which were put down about a week and a half ago. I ended up snagging some new ones from the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op to help us out on short notice. Those are now happily sitting in pots germinating under grow lights. The rest of the plants seem to be thriving under the lights and will be transplanted soon enough.

[singlepic id=114 w=320 h=240 float=right]Rick and I started a new project this past week. We are building a three stage compost pile. We understand that this is supposed to help speed up the composting process, assuming we stay on top of it. It’s been coming up in stages and I have had the pleasure to make some new friends along the way. I first dug in the eight posts and decided that in order to make this thing beautiful, some bamboo would be required. Another day, with the help of Teddy and a new friend Caio we harvested bamboo from a generous new friend I met off of Free Cycle, Greg. Greg allowed us to come in and harvest from his backyard and even helped with the process. It is almost complete.

I am falling asleep as I write this so I’ll take it as a sign to get off my computer and head to bed. I still have some chickens to take care of, and want to leave you all with a great picture of a little someone who decided my head gave her a better view and just hopped on up.

All the best,

Hunter
