April 2013 Update

[singlepic id=139 w=320 h=240 float=left]

The past few days have been exciting and given us some great exposure. April 20th was Earth Day Roanoke and Lick Run had a table set up to share our story and some of our produce. We also had some mustard greens with chickpeas and curry to sample. We saw plenty of new faces and made some new friends. We want to give a special thanks to Ron McCorkle at The Urbiculture Foundation (Facebook) for encouraging us to set up a booth and his help over the past few weeks. [singlepic id=137 w=320 h=240 float=right]If you are in need of organic lawn service in Roanoke check out Ron’s other work, Soil Cultures (Facebook). We also want to thank Mark Powell of the Roanoke Community Garden Association (Facebook) for his continued support.

With some help over the past few days we have been able to get plenty of plants in the ground. Some that we are particularly looking forward to are the strawberries. Neighborhood volunteers Anadia and Vashey and VT student Andrew helped with the transplants.[singlepic id=136 w=320 h=240 float=left] Plenty of new seeds have also been sown over the past few weeks. We also acquired a number of raspberry plants which are going to be put along Andrews Road at Lick Run. We’ll make sure to update ya’ll when that happens. The past few days Hunter also finished up creating our washing station. Counter tops have been made and the sink has been fitted and installed.

The past few weeks we also started creating a chicken enclosure outside. Our lovely ladies are getting bigger and bigger each day. They also seem to be getting smarter and smarter. We had a ‘prison break’ yesterday, but we have yet to figure out how.[singlepic id=138 w=320 h=240 float=right] Hunter walked outside and Cuckoo Chanel was just hanging out on top of their current enclosure.

Oh, by the way, we have decided to change our weekly updates to something more of a monthly or biweekly update. Things are getting busier and more hectic each day and we don’t want to sacrifice quality for volume.

Wishing you all the best,
Hunter and Rick
